Is Living in SOC Manipal as Good as in MIT Manipal?

The question often arises among prospective students – while both MIT (Manipal Institute of Technology) and SOC (School of Commerce) are located in the same campus in Manipal, is life as good in SOC Manipal as it is in MIT Manipal?

Is Life the Same for Everyone in Manipal?

Life in Manipal can be described as a common experience for all students, regardless of whether they are in MIT or SOC. The academic journey at both colleges is structured similarly. The difference lies mainly in the courses and the academic buildings. However, the overall college life is more or less the same for everyone. Social activities, hangouts, and leisure time are shared experiences that unite students from different academic backgrounds.

Hangouts and Common Spaces

Despite the variance in courses and class timetables, everyone in Manipal tends to have typical hangout spots. These include Kamath Circle, KMC Greens, and other popular areas around the campus. These locations become a melting pot of students from all courses, from engineers to sociologists, creating a vibrant and diverse social environment. You will find yourself mingling with students from MIT and other courses effortlessly, making new friends and creating lasting memories.

Hostel Life and Friendships

The living situation for students in MIT and SOC is also the same, with both residing in the same hostels. This means you will share hostel life and schedules with MIT students. Moreover, due to a diversified student body, you're likely to have friends from different academic backgrounds, such as Engineering, Medicine, Management, and more. For instance, during my time as an MIT student, I had friends from SOC, KMC (King's College Manipal), MMMC (Manipal Management and Modern Studies College), Architecture, Wadi Super School of Hospitality (WSSH), SOP (School of Performing Arts), and others. This diverse mix of friends adds to the richness of the college life.

Even though I was an engineering student, I could often not differentiate who was an MITian and who was from SOC, SOC Manipal until sessional or internal exams. This seamless mix of students ensures a lively and engaging social life for all.

Enriching Experiences and Fun Activities

At MIT Manipal, the college life isn't just about academics. The rich mix of social and extracurricular activities ensures that you never run out of fun. There are numerous places to explore and activities to enjoy. You'll discover new hobbies, participate in clubs, take part in campus events, and grow personally and professionally.

Once you settle in, there is no shortage of places to visit nearby. The city of Manipal has plenty to offer, from museums to markets, making sure your free time is never boring. You can explore the nearby areas, enjoy the local cuisine, and have endless fun with your newfound friends.

Overall, while MIT and SOC may have some differences in course structure and academic buildings, the overall college experience is remarkably similar. Whether you're in MIT or SOC, you're in for a great time, filled with new friends, unique experiences, and lifelong memories.
